This workshop will teach you tips and techniques on how to walk into an interview feeling confident and prepared, with emphasis on: interpreter preparation, what the hiring panels are looking for and how to sell your BEST self.

This workshop will give you an inside view on what the federal hiring process entails and how to make sure your resume and/or promotion package aligns with the job solicitation and position.

  • What do you know about your agency’s Affirmative Action Plan?  (Angela Cannella)
Critical current trends assert that Deaf people should have equal access to employability in the federal government. Although Executive Order 13548 resulted in the prompt hiring of persons with disabilities, many factors have identified that current hiring process trends need to be strengthen the hiring of people with targeted disabilities in the federal government workforce. A new amend rule to Section 501 from Equal Employee Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal government agency is required to provide its’ agency's affirmative action plan to implement the hiring best practices, recruitment strategies, partnerships, and future activities to increase the agency’s workforce with people with disabilities and targeted disabilities.

  • Support, Equip, Empower - Finding Reasonable Accommodation Solutions (Jeffrey Dallos)
The Department of Defense’s (DoD) Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) has provided over 182,000 accommodations to Federal employees with disabilities and wounded Service members. CAP is committed to providing assistive technology and accommodations to ensure people with disabilities and wounded Service members have equal access to the information environment and opportunities in the Department of Defense and throughout the Federal Government. This interactive presentation will provide eight strategies to remove or mitigate the needs assessment process conflict, and review the three-pronged CAP needs assessment process. The session will include an overview of assistive technology provided as accommodations for various disabilities, including deaf and hard of hearing. Time will also be afforded to demonstrate several specific technologies during the workshop. Several case studies will be used as an exercise for attendees to implement and reinforce concepts learned through role play scenarios.

  • Captivate: Delivering a Dynamic Presentation to a Hearing Audience  (Roberta Mather)

You have been called to present. Now what? Speaking in front of an audience can be daunting, even more so with an added layer–its delivery through a sign language interpreter. Whether it is in an auditorium, boardroom, courtroom or a classroom, learn the strategies on how to transform your ideas into an influential presentation cross languages and cross cultures with full credibility. The “Dynamic” formula, as revealed in the workshop, addresses techniques on: 1. Shaping Your Content; 2. Selecting/Teaming with an Interpreter; 3. Preparing for the Presentation; and 4. Commanding the Audience with Delivery and Space. Strategies to overcome interpreting challenges, communication failures and other worst-case scenarios will be addressed. Additionally, we will discuss how to apply effective techniques on a smaller scale (e.g. meetings). Blending research-based applications, effective policies and best practices, this workshop challenges conventional thinking about what is possible when delivering an effective presentation through an interpreter to a hearing audience. The ultimate goal is to make you, the choreographer of your content, effectively team with an interpreter to compel the audience to react the exact way you intend and to see you as whole you–a subject matter expert with a story to tell.

  • Federal Relay Services Training  (Tatyana Mezentseva)

The Federal Relay Service is the contracted Federal Government Telecommunications Relay Service through the General Services Administration (GSA) for Federal employees who are deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, blind and low vision, or have speech disabilities. This contract provides a package of functionally equivalent communication access services so that Federal employees may conduct official duties. Federal Relay is available in two forms: telephone-based and internet- based services and include Text Telephone (TTY), Speech to Speech (STS), Captioned Telephone (CapTel), Video Relay Service (VRS), Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), Internet Protocol (IP) Relay, and Relay Conference Captioning (RCC).

In a very competitive market and specifically where Deaf-friendly job opportunities are scarce, it is critically important to put together a resume and Cover letter that clearly and concisely convey one’s background, experience, and character. Come learn how to build a dream-career winning resume and cover letter from an experienced fellow deaf individual in a Human Resource lens and learn what most hiring employers seek in a resume and cover letter. In this workshop you will learn what to write, what not and other tips related to win the competition before you have the opportunity to sell yourself through interview. This workshop will also touch base on what are the best tips to maintain and grow in your career once achieved.

  • Optimizing Your Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) (Stephanie Summers and Lee Kramer)
This workshop is geared for employees of the Federal Government and Gallaudet University who have access to the Federal retirement plan, Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). It will focus on three aspects of the plan: contributions, investment options, and withdrawal options in retirement. Participants will understand contribution limits, employer contributions (CSRS and FERS), and the difference between Traditional and Roth TSP. An overview of each of the investment options will be provided and other plan features will also be explained. Lastly, participants will learn how to best optimize their withdrawal options both under the current plan rules as well as under the provisions of the new TSP Modernization Act.
