2019 Year in Review

Happy New Year, Everyone!

The Deaf in Government (DIG) Board would like to reflect on the events that took place during 2019 and give you all a preview for what is to come in 2020.

Our first official event for 2019 was the DIG Seminar “Leading the Way Forward: Workplace Accessibility, Communications and Resilience” that was held on September 20, 2019 at Gallaudet University. We invited many speakers to share their experiences working in the Government environment. We were pleased at how everyone collaborated to make this learning opportunity a huge success. Many thanks to the Moderator, Suzy Rosen-Singleton and team of the presenters for sharing their talent and expertise. Thanks to Microsoft for sponsoring the DIG Training Seminar.

DIG also supported Federal Employees Women (FEW) who hosted a Seminar on October 29, 2019 for two hours and various speakers who have successfully reached the GS-15/SES level provided great insight into the Federal workplace environment. Each of the speakers shared personal stories on how to successfully navigate a career through planning and establishing clear goals.

We also hosted several professional networking events this year and provided great opportunities for Deaf professionals to engage in important discussions while advancing our DIG Objectives. A special thanks to Amazon and Sorenson for their sponsorship of the "Professional Networking Event." During the summertime, Amazon generously hosted the Professional Networking Event. Sorenson also graciously hosted the Professional Networking Event in the fall. These events are popular as many of our DIG members desire to advance our involvement within public services. This is one of the many benefits for our sponsors and we look forward to continuing the partnership.

To wrap up 2019, DIG hosted a successful annual “Inside the Snow Globe” holiday social on December 6, 2019 at Carmines, a popular restaurant in Washington D.C. We would like to thank all of the sponsors that made this holiday social a success through their generous support. Our sponsors for this event includes Deaf Access Solutions, ZVRS/Purple, Sorenson Video Relay Service, Kramer Financial Services, Gallaudet University, and Sprint Federal Relay Service.

Additionally, Cham Le, the President of DIG, thanked all attendees during the holiday social and acknowledged a few distinguished guests. Our guests shared some thoughts and perspectives regarding advancements in technology and the impact it will have within Deaf and hard of hearing workforce. Our distinguished guest list included, Roberta Mather, Acting Deputy Director of the Office of Global Publishing Solutions at U.S. Department of State; Roberta “Bobbi” Cordano, President of Gallaudet University; Dean Halstead, Director of Collaboration, Cloud and Accessibility of Microsoft; and Howard Rosenblum, CEO of the National Association for the Deaf (NAD).

On the other hand, DIG is excited to announce several upcoming events for 2020:

  • The Re-brand name "Innovations and Government Engagement (IGE)" Track (Former Government Employees Training (GET)) will be in Chicago, Illinois from June 30, 2020 to July 5, 2020 in partnership with the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) at the Biennial Conference.
  • The DIG Accessibility Banquet at the DeafNation World Expo & Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 16, 2020.
  • The DIG Expo in Washington, D.C. in Fall 2020.

Development Coordinator: Do you like fundraising or want to learn how to be a fundraiser? We are seeking a volunteer to coordinate sponsorship proposals.

Recording Secretary: Are you good at taking notes? We are looking for a volunteer to fill in this vacant board position, to help us take meeting minutes and provide administrative support as needed.

2020 Deaf in Government Expo committee: Do you enjoy event planning? Angela Cannella is seeking volunteers to help her plan the 2020 DIG Expo.
